Apps that quiz you before you open Instagram or TikTok

By Rodrigo Puente, maker of BrainTok · Updated October 20, 2026

A new kind of screen-time app puts a question in front of your distracting apps. They differ in one big way: most only let you in if you get the answer right. Here’s a quick guide, as of October 2026.

We make BrainTok, the first app on this list. Facts about the others come from their own App Store pages and websites, linked at the bottom.

BrainTok

Asks 3 quick questions (1 to 20, your choice) before the apps you pick, from a library of reviewed quizzes or quizzes AI makes from your notes, photos and PDFs. Every answer has an explanation, and the app opens right or wrong: it’s about learning, not earning your way in. English, Spanish and Italian. iPhone, iOS 17+. $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year, 3-day free trial.

QuizScreen

You answer each question correctly to unlock an app for a time you choose. Free core with offline packs; AI quizzes are part of its premium plan. iPhone and iPad, iOS 17+.

Quizwall

Answer 5 questions to get in; fail, and the app stays blocked. AI-made quizzes, 12 languages. $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year. iPhone and iPad.

ScrollToll

One study question unlocks an app for 5 minutes, from exam packs like the MCAT, USMLE and SAT, mental math, chess or vocabulary; miss it and it comes back later. English only, iPhone, iOS 18+.

ScrollScholar

Makes AI quizzes from class notes or language lessons; correct answers earn points you spend on screen time. English, iPhone and iPad, with plans from $3.99 a month.

How to choose

  • Want a hard gate you must pass? QuizScreen, Quizwall and ScrollToll only open on a right answer.
  • Studying for a specific exam? ScrollToll’s packs or quizzes from your own notes (BrainTok, ScrollScholar).
  • Want to learn without fighting your phone, in Spanish or Italian too? BrainTok opens either way and explains every answer.

Questions
